Life’s An Adventure

The Best Journeys Answer the Questions That in the Beginning You Didn’t Even Think to Ask.

— 180° South

Hi!!  My name is Rylie and I am the creator of this new blog/website/recipe haven/place to see mouthwatering food porn and so on.  It is SO, SO nice to meet you!!

You may be wondering who I am or why you’re sitting there listening to me as I type away way over here??… Both good questions that I hope answer themselves overtime; you know, as you get to know me 🙂

Today though, I’m simply going to try and put 5 years into a few paragraphs to give you a synopsis of what’s to come!!  Enjoy!

When I was 24, fresh out of culinary school, I decided to start my own bakery – RylieCakes: An Artisanal Gluten Free Bakery.  Yes, you guessed it, I have Celiacs!  More on that later though…

During the 4.5 years the bakery’s doors were open, I was deeply in love.  I was so enthralled by the adventure of it all – starting my own business, picking out everything from forks to ovens, writing recipes, learning about social media, advertising, working with customers, going to wedding shows, having random health department checks, building a website, scheduling preventative maintenance, baking cookies & cakes until the cows came home, growing a fan base, ALL OF IT.  I. Loved. All of it.

The daily grind got me out of bed every morning around 4:30a and I would go non-stop until my head hit the pillow at night.  The constant hustle & bustle of running the bakery made me feel alive – every day was something new making it that much more exhilarating!

However, after 5 years of going balls to the wall 24/7, it got the best of me.  I started having anxiety, panic attacks, sleepless nights, a constant feeling I wasn’t good enough – I needed to work harder, do more, and be more.

Let’s be real – those feelings sucked.  We’ve all been there, someplace, sometime, somehow…

I’ve always been a firm believer though that we have control over our own lives – that we create our own destiny.

It took thousands of moments sitting in silence, bawling my eyes out, writing feverishly in my diary, talking Ben’s ear off (bless his heart), and eventually going to see a therapist before I actually figured it out.  I had been banging my head against the wall the past few months because I created a world that was no longer suited for the person I’d become.

I realized that running a bakery was no longer for me – it was an all-consuming lifestyle that I sincerely adored and appreciated for the 5 years I did it but my time was up.  I had changed so much as a human being over those 5 years and I was finally at the point where my life needed to change along with me.

I dreamed of a life with balance being my top priority.  I wanted to feel a sense of alignment between my body, mind, and soul.  I desperately needed more nose boops from Barkley (our dog) and turkey time with Oliver (our cat).  I seriously wished I could watch Gerald & The Gang swim more (our fish) and hang out with Blanche & The Chicks in the coop (obviously, they’re our chickens).  If you have ever had chickens you would be able to back me up when I state, they are incredibly entertaining!!  I yearned for more time with Ben and deeper, more meaningful connections with loved ones.  I needed to press restart.

I closed down the bakery in November 2017 – November 11th was our last day.  I am so grateful for all of our insanely amazing customers that came out to support us that day and every other day we were open for that matter.  My dream was a huge success because of their undying love and support over the years.  I can never say it enough, but THANK YOU to all the RylieCakes customers and fans already out there!!

Sooooo then… why am I here today??

Well, first things first, I took two months off over the holidays to hit restart.  To breathe, to spend time with friends and family, to witness one of my oldest and best friends give birth, to walk Barkley daily, adopt a new kitten (our little Ollie Bug passed away at the end of September), cook for Ben whatever he wanted – whenever he wanted, to do yoga, to sleep in, to binge watch Narcos and The Crown, to read books, and drink a glass of wine at noon.  It was GLORIOUS!!

And this might be the part where you start thinking I’m crazy…

I’m revived and back at it!!  [Insert slightly wicked laughter]  AND ready to build RylieCakes 2.0!

I have three goals for this new journey of mine to share RylieCakes with the world:

1. Bring RylieCakes Gluten Free Flour Blends to market to make baking + cooking GF at home way easier, much more fun, and far more delicious!!

2. Write some damn cookbooks already!!  Customers have been asking for years and now more than ever, I want to share my fabulous GF recipes with you so you can share them with your loved ones too!

3. Don’t take myself too seriously; it will all come together eventually.

To wrap it up for now, I am here today to invite you on this journey of mine.  I invite you to come along and experience all the growing pains of starting your own business with me.  I invite you to learn alongside me as I navigate these two new industries, figure out the “ins and outs”, and hopefully, get a few chuckles along the way.

Once I truly get rolling I’ll throw in videos with tips and tricks – maybe share some of my killer dance moves with you too?!  I’ll most definitely throw in new recipes (more and more as the flour blends hit the market) and I promise to always include many photos – even if it is just TONS of fur baby pics because who are we kidding, I have thousands of them and they just make you happy!!

I seriously believe anything is possible – you just need to have the heart, guts, perseverance, determination, and dedication to see it though.  So, welcome to my journey – welcome to a world of learning, creating, and most importantly, brining your dreams to life!

Lick the Bowl – You Only Live Once,

Tara Rylie
